I agree with your quotation, Marilyn! And further, it is only in engaging other cultures that we are even aware of aspects of our own. So this is a constant, ongoing aspect of our lives: noticing the “other” and so reflecting on our own mental furniture and viewpoints. Like a fish in water, we are unconscious of some of our most deeply held cultural “truths” until we are brought, gasping for our familiar environment, onto the shores of another heritage.
